Circular Economy as a Future Model: The Swiss Circular Center for E-Mobility in Solothurn
Mobility is one of the largest emitters of fossil CO₂. Decarbonizing transportation therefore poses major challenges for both the economy and society. Critical raw materials, new technologies, and the pursuit of a circular economy demand innovative approaches and solutions. A flagship project in this field is the Circular Center for E-Mobility (KEM) located at the Papieri site in Biberist.
“With the rapid growth of e-mobility, new technologies are coming into focus – and these technologies need access to optimal locations.”
– Dr. Karl Brander, Economic Development, Canton of Solothurn
The KEM demonstrates how tradition can evolve into the future: on the grounds of a former paper mill, an innovation ecosystem is emerging that recycles materials from end-of-life electric vehicles. At its core are lithium-ion batteries, whose annual return volume in Switzerland alone is projected to reach 15,000 tons by 2040. Companies such as Librec, Libattion, and Grensol are developing solutions that achieve recovery rates of over 97%, even converting polymer waste into water and carbon.
Starting in 2026, the Swiss Battery Technology Center will introduce automated processes to elevate battery recycling to a new level – a decisive step toward sustainability and independence from international raw material supply chains.
Why does this matter?
The KEM is more than a recycling hub: it is a European innovation platform. Businesses benefit from direct knowledge exchange, joint development projects, and scalable solutions. This creates a network that is not only ecologically sound but also economically future-proof.
